ELSENHAM WI

Elsenham WI

The Women's Institute (WI) was formed in 1915 to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Since then the organisation's aims have broadened and the WI is now based on the ideals of fellowship, truth, tolerance and justice.

The WI is the largest voluntary women's organisation in the UK with currently 212,000 members in over 6,500 groups across the country and plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills; to take part in a wide variety of activities, and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.

Elsenham WI was established in 1921 and continues to go from strength to strength. As of January 2016, we have over 50 members, a number that has more than doubled in the last three years.

We have members in their 20’s and members in their 90’s, with every age group in between. This brings a wonderful diversity of interests, skills and experience that we are always keen to expand.

In recent months, Elsenham WI has organised a variety of events and activities, including:

  • 2015 Poppy Appeal – generating over £2,750 for the Royal British Legion by making and selling knitted poppies, as well as creating a ‘Field of Remembrance’ for the November memorial services in Elsenham Memorial Gardens

  • WI Centenary Celebration – Cocktail party with live jazz

  • Demonstration of ‘Sugar Craft’

  • Talk on ‘The Origins and Development of Great Ormond Street Hospital’

  • Talk on ‘The Younger You’ – nutritional and lifestyle approach to fight aging

  • Workshops on making wine glass charms and floral decorations

  • Workshops on computer skills and using social media – sharing experience and

    learning together.

We meet on the third Thursday each month at 7:45pm in the Memorial Hall, Leigh Drive, Elsenham and would be delighted to see you. Visitors are always welcome and we are more than happy for you to come along and see what we have to offer - you don’t have to join the WI immediately!
